State Capitol at Dawn, 1953 State Capitol - Night Lighting at Dawn

Background

The Wisconsin Capitol occupies the center of Capital Square in downtown Madison, Wisconsin. It also sits on the top of a hill in the middle of an isthmus between Lake Mendota to the northwest and Lake Monona to the southeast.

The capitol was designed by architects George B. Post and Sons. Construction began in late 1906 and ended in 1917. The building height is 284.4 feet from ground to the top of the statue, just 3 feet lower than the national Capitol in Washington DC. The exterior is constructed of white Bethel Vermont granite which has similar appearance and whiteness to marble.

The dome is the largest dome by volume in the United States. It is capped by a 15 foot 5 inch statue Wisconsin which symbolizes the state motto Forward.

Model References

The model was constructed using Autodesk Maya v8 with photographs used as references. No building blueprints were used so the model is an approximation of the actual building. The primary reference photographs used were those I had taken on a vacation to Madison in 2002.
